WINTER AT WINTER FORGE
During fall of 1777, General George Washington's Continental Army moved south to protect Philadelphia from General William Howe. Washington and his army was nowhere prepared for the cold winter approaching them. They camped in Valley Forge, which is approximately 20 miles away from Philadelphia. The soldiers had
little food; they mostly ate a food called "firecake", which is a mix of water and flour. With little clothes and food, many of the soldiers died. In February 1778, Washington sent Brigadier General Anthony Wayne to New Jersey to gather the men food and cattle. He returned a month later with 50 cattle and 30 horses! As spring was arriving, the weather started getting warmer, and warmer; disease stroked at the men. throughout the next 3 months, 2,000 men died, two-thirds of those men died from disease such as influenza, typhus, typhoid, and dysentery. In March, Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Von Stenben came to the camp to help train the army.
On May 6, 1778, the army celebrated because they created an alliance with France. On June 19th, Washington and his army finally left Valley of Forge. After leaving Valley of Forge, the Continental Army stopped the British at the Battle of Monmouth; Von Stenben's help really paid off! From then on, the Washington's Army won Battle of Yorktown and many more battles.
